What is the purpose of this study?

This is a clinical research study to learn about the roles that genes and environment play in determining why some children get asthma and allergies and how we can prevent or reduce symptoms.

Who will be included in this study?

Healthy children between 5 and 18 years old may be eligible to participate if they do NOT have asthma or allergies AND if neither of their parents nor their siblings have asthma or allergies.

What is involved?

This study includes a single visit that will be approximately 30 to 60 minutes in length and may include:

  • Questionnaire completion
  • Skin prick testing for potential allergies
  • Saliva or buccal cell (swab from the inside of the cheek) collection
  • Blood draw (optional, based on additional screening criteria)

What are the benefits?

While your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study, your child may be helping other children. Clinical studies are essential in finding new and more personalized interventions and treatments. However, if skin prick testing for potential allergens is performed or if your child completes a diet-related questionnaire, you will be given the results during your visit or by mail.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The consent covers all the procedures, risks, benefits, compensation, who to contact with questions or concerns, and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will answer all of your questions. Study procedures will not begin until a parent/guardian has signed this form and, if of age (8 years or older), the child has given at minimum his/her verbal agreement.

What are the risks?

None.

What is the pay?

Parents and children will be compensated between $10 to $60 for their time and travel involved in this single-visit study.
