Towards Biomarkers for SLE Renal Disease
The purpose of this study is to learn more about why there is a higher incidence of kidney involvement in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) compared to adult onset SLE.
- Approximately 40 participants (SLE patients) and 80 controls (JRA patients and siblings) from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center will take part in this study
- An outcome study; NO experimental medicines, treatments or procedures are involved. Study data will be gathered from the medical record.
- 7 study visits over 18 months (1.5 years); study visits will occur at the time of a routine visit with your doctor.
- Subjects will complete questionnaires regarding health and well-being; these will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Physicians will also answer questions as part of the study.
- If you are a lupus patient, you will be asked to collect two (2) 12 hour urine specimens, one at the beginning of the study and one at the end. JRA patients will not be asked to collect this sample.
- A blood sample (approx. 1 teaspoon) will be collected at each study visit. If your doctor requires any blood tests, the study blood sample will be drawn at the same time (same needle).
- You will receive a $10.00 gift certificate at each study visit as compensation for participation.
