  • Better Care Through Better Imaging

The Heart Institute’s Cardiac MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Program is a pioneer in combining imaging and diagnostic services. Through our collaboration, we can diagnose and monitor your child’s condition, and prepare plans for the most appropriate treatment, in a seamless, effective process.

We leverage the strengths of our collaboration, with a team of two pediatric cardiologists: Michael Taylor, MD, PhD and Kan N. Hor, MD and four pediatric radiologists: Robert Fleck MD, Eric J. Crotty, MBBCh, Kathy J. Helton, MD, and Daniel J. Podberesky, MD. Our physicians have had additional, focused training in pediatric cardiac MRI.  Our program also relies on the important work of our clinical staff including over 20 MRI technicians as well as our specially trained expert imaging analysts, Amy Tipton, BFA, and Joshua Germann, RDCS.

    Clinical CMR Service

The comprehensive clinical CMR service at Cincinnati Children's performs CMR scans on children and adults with many forms of congenital and acquired heart disease. The program has developed a unique expertise in assessment of cardiomyopathy associated with neuromuscular disease. We also have expertise in scanning adults with congenital heart disease, infants with complex congenital heart disease and young women with Turner's syndrome.

The clinical Cardiac MRI Program is also unique in that we perform clinical CMR scans on both modern 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla cardiac MRI systems. Utilizing multiple scanner strength adds flexibility in providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment.

The Heart Institute CMR Program is also on the forefront of programs in the nation, thanks to our use of "video sedation” – allowing young patients to watch a movie in virtual reality – for children as young as five years old.
