The Heart Institute is a national leader in the treatment of complex heart disease and heart transplantation. We specialize in the complete correction of heart defects in newborns and surgical management of complex single ventricle cardiac defects. About 25 percent of our cardiac surgery patients are less than a month old, and 60 percent are under a year of age. We perform nearly 400 cardiac operations a year, with about 250 of those being open-heart surgeries.
Our Heart Transplant Program is the oldest pediatric heart transplant program in Ohio. It is part of the Heart Institute’s combined program linking cardiomyopathy/heart failure and mechanical circulatory support care. The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) program at the Heart Institute is a nationally recognized leader in mechanical circulatory
support (MCS) and is available at all times for consultation.
Our cardiothoracic surgery team is focused on not only improving surgical outcomes for your child, but also on making complex heart surgery safer.
We take a unique multidisciplinary approach to providing the best possible care for your child. Our cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, pharmacists and other team members conduct rounds and host briefings together, ensuring that your child’s unique care plan is crafted by a diverse team of experts.
Our cardiothoracic team also explores various types of research to change the course of pediatric heart disease, including:
