Comprehensive Children's Injury Center

  • Dedicated to Reducing Childhood Injuries

When your injured child comes through our doors, our expert clinicians stand ready to provide the best available care. But our work doesn’t stop there. The Comprehensive Children’s Injury Center (CCIC) also studies injury care, trains health professionals, improves community injury prevention programs, and advocates for better local, state and national injury policy.

It is the aim of the CCIC to improve population health, improve the individual experience of care, and reduce the per capita health care cost for pediatric injury.

    Clinical

The CCIC is in the processes of piloting a new Head Injury Clinic. This clinic is a place for patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injuries to receive comprehensive care. The Head Injury Clinic will be a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic with coordinated care between providers in sports medicine, neurology, PM&R, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, and trauma just to name a few. The mission of the clinic is to improve access and timeliness access of care of children with TBIs and improve patient and family satisfaction.  The clinic would also like to build a strong foundation for the development of evidence-based clinical care that will improve the quality of care for all children with TBIs. As a part of the pilot, the clinic is creating one number for all concussion patients to call for an appointment, 513-803-HEAD (4323). This clinic will also serve a place for physicians in the community including pediatricians to refer more complicated patients and those whose symptoms are not resolving.

    Prevention

A prevailing belief in our society is that childhood injuries are accidents or random events. To the contrary, a growing body of scientific evidence has established that injury is similar to any other disease in that it follows a pattern and is highly predictable and preventable. As part of our commitment to excellence in pediatric care, Cincinnati Children’s has not only embraced the concept of injury as a disease, but also the belief that prevention is the most humane and cost-effective form of cure.

The multifaceted approach toward injury prevention employs the disciplines of education, healthcare, community groups, law enforcement and the media. These disciplines form the building blocks of a solid network of community-based partnerships and programs designed to increase awareness and education. This multifaceted approach allows development of strategies for specific target populations, as well as fostering community involvement and promoting public awareness.
