Reducing Unintentional Injuries
Injury is among the most under-recognized public health problems facing our nation today and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in the United States. Injuries cause more deaths in children over the age of 1 than all diseases combined. Non-fatal injuries, requiring medical attention, affect approximately 20 million children and adolescents, and exceeds $17 billion annually in medical costs.
Unintentional injuries are not accidents; they are predictable and preventable. Comprehensive strategies prevent unintentional injuries — which includes falls, burns, poisonings, drownings and traffic-related injuries — from occurring. Education and resources keep children safe while at play, at home and on the go, which keeps our communities safe and thriving.
The mission of the Comprehensive Children’s Injury Center (CCIC) is to reduce the burden of unintentional injury on the health and well-being of children and adolescents by being the leader in injury prevention, research, clinical outcomes, education, and advocacy.
