Research Study for Healthy Children and Adults 8 to 60 Years Old
What is the purpose of this study?
Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to compare the electrical patterns of the brain in healthy children and adults to those of child and adult patients with Tourette’s syndrome.
Who can participate?
Healthy children and adults between the ages of 8 and 60 years old willing to undergo exams and testing with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive hand-held magnet put gently over the scalp, may be eligible to participate.
What is involved?
Participation in this research study involves 1 study visit (about 1 ½ hours) and includes:
- Completion of standardized tests
- Review of medical history
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, brain stimulation using a hand-held magnet placed gently over the scalp
What are the benefits?
There is no direct medical benefit from participating in this study. It is possible that knowledge gained through this research study will help patients with Tourette’s syndrome in the future.
Will I get all the facts about the study?
Adults or parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.
What are the risks and discomforts of the study?
There are limited risks associated with the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. Potential mild and temporary side effects include scalp discomfort, hand weakness, headache and neck and arm pain. Other possible discomforts will be discussed with parents or guardians interested in learning more about the study.
Do participants receive pay, compensation or reimbursement?
Participants will be paid $30 for this one-visit study.
