Research Study for Children and Teens with Asthma

What is the purpose of this study?

This is a research study to learn more about:

  1. The role that genes and environmental exposures have in determining why
some children develop asthma and allergies and
  2. How we can prevent, control or reduce asthma and allergy symptoms.

Who can participate?

Children and teens 5 to 18 years old who have been diagnosed with asthma by a doctor and have been living in the Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky area for at least five years may be eligible to participate.

Ages

  • From 5 To 18  years old

Conditions

  • Asthma

What is involved?

This study includes a single visit that will be approximately 1 to ½ hours in length and may include:

  • Questionnaire completion
  • Saliva or buccal cell (swab from the inside of the cheek) collection
  • Hair samples
  • Blowing into a mouthpiece
  • Cell sample from the lining of the nose (for some participants)
  • Blood draw

What are the benefits?

While your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study, your child may be helping other children. Clinical studies are essential in finding new and more personalized interventions and treatments. However, if your child completes a diet-related questionnaire, you will receive the results by mail.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The consent covers all the procedures, risks, benefits, compensation, who to contact with questions or concerns, and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will answer all of your questions. Study procedures will not begin until a parent/guardian has signed this form and, if of age (8 years or older), the child has given at minimum his/her verbal agreement.

Do participants receive pay, compensation or reimbursement?

Families will be paid between $40 and $60 for time and travel and may receive a diet analysis report free of charge.
