Clinical Trials Office

Asthma Research Study for Children and Teens 6 to 17 Years Old

What is the purpose of this study?

Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to look at 2 different asthma medications and standard asthma care. The study team wants to see if either of the medications will prevent an asthma attack in the fall season better than standard asthma care.

Who can participate?

Children and teens 6 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with asthma and:

  • Have had an asthma attack in the last year

                                 and

  • Live in the inner city of Cincinnati, including Over the Rhine, Avondale, Price Hill, Fairmount, North Fairmount, Millvale and surrounding areas

What is involved?

Your child will be in the research study for approximately 12 to 15 months. Participation in this research study will involve up to 16 visits.  He/she will be randomized (put into a group by chance) to be in one of 3 study groups. A detailed list of procedures will be provided to parents or guardians interested in knowing more about this study.  Some of the procedures include:

  • Physical exam
  • Blood, urine and mucus collections
  • Allergy skin tests
  • Breathing tests
  • Home dust and air sample collection
  • Treatment with 1 of 2 study medications or placebo

What are the benefits?

Your child may not receive a direct medical benefit from participating in this study.  You will have care provided by a study medical provider who is trained in asthma care. If you have allergy skin testing, the results will be shared with you.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that explains all of the details of the study.  The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, whom to contact with questions or concerns, and more.  A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.

Do participants receive pay, compensation or reimbursement?

Families will be compensated for their time.
