Children 18-36 Months with Down Syndrome for Language Study

What is the purpose of this study?

The Thomas Center at Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study for children with Down syndrome to evaluate whether indirect language therapy will have the same effects on their speech as traditional language therapy.

Who can participate?

Children with Down syndrome 18-36 months old and their parents or guardians may be eligible to participate.

  • From 18 To 36  months old

  • Down Syndrome
  • Language/Speech

What is involved?

The study lasts for one year after all participants have been enrolled and includes 27 visits. The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:

  • 3 speech evaluations spaced 6 months apart
  • 12 sessions of direct language therapy
  • 9 sessions of indirect group therapy and 3 sessions of indirect individual therapy

What are the benefits?

Your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. The greatest benefit is that your child may be contributing to research that helps other children. Research studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered. Study procedures will not begin until a parent or guardian has signed this form.

What are the risks and discomforts of the study?

A possible risk associated with this study is the slight risk of a loss of confidentiality which will be minimized as much as possible by keeping study records secure.

Do participants receive pay, compensation or reimbursement?

Participants will receive 12 free sessions of indirect language therapy and related materials from the Thomas Center for Down Syndrome.
