RSV Vaccine Study for Children and Teens

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children's is doing a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to learn if an experimental respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV vaccine is safe and could offer protection from serious RSV disease. RSV is a common respiratory virus that can be very serious for infants and older adults. It is one of the leading causes of hospitalization for infants.

Who can participate?

Your child may be eligible if they are

  • 2 years through 17 years old
  • Healthy OR may have stable health conditions that put them at risk for RSV such as:
  • Asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases
  • Reactive Airway Disease
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Malformations of the larynx; trachea and bronchi
  • Down syndrome
  • Cardiac Disease
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Congenital or primary pulmonary hypertension
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Neuromuscular diseases
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Encephalocele, spina bifida and/or malformations of the spinal cord

Conditions

  • Vaccines
  • Healthy Infants, Children and Adolescent Studies
  • Asthma
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Chest and Lungs - Respiratory Tract
  • Cardiology/Heart
  • Down Syndrome
  • Neurology
  • Spina Bifida

What will happen in the study?

Your child will:

  • Receive one dose of the experimental RSV Vaccine
  • Have 2 clinic visits and 2 phone call visits over 6 months
  • Have 2 blood draws over one month

You will complete a symptom diary to record any symptoms your child/adolescent may have, the evening after receiving the trial vaccination and for 6 days after receiving the trial vaccination.

You will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains the details of the study. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will answer all of your questions.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

Your infant/child may or may not personally benefit from their participation in this trial. However, by taking part, your infant/child will help to provide new scientific information that will contribute to the development of RSV vaccines.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

Possible risks and discomforts will be discussed with you prior to the start of the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants will receive up to $365 for time and effort to complete the study.
