Tourette’s Disorder Study For Children and Adults ages 6 and up

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children's is conducting a research study to learn more about the safety and efficacy of an investigational drug for individuals diagnosed with Tourette's Disorder. We want to see if this study drug can help stop tics (involuntary movements or sounds) for individuals affected by Tourette's Disorder.

Who can participate?

Children and adults ages 6 and up who are diagnosed with Tourette’s Disorder and who:

  • Have both motor and vocal tics that cause impairment with normal routines
  • May not be taking any medications used to treat motor or vocal tics for at least 14 days prior to Baseline Visit

Conditions

  • Neurology

What will happen in the study?

If you or your child qualifies and you decide you want your child or yourself to be in the study, you will come to Cincinnati Children’s at least 15 times over a period of 7 months. Study participants will also receive 2 telephone calls during the study. Most visits will last about 4 hours, but some may last up to 6 hours. These are the things that will happen to you or your child while in the study:

We will ask you to:

  • Complete questionnaires
  • Complete a physical exam
  • Consent to blood and urine samples (including for drug testing)
  • Perform tasks/activities and answer questions to determine how their Tourette’s Disorder affects him or her
  • Take the study drug as directed

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

You or your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. However, we hope to learn information from the study that may help us with more effective treatments for Tourette’s Disorder in the future. Research studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

Possible risks and discomforts will be discussed with those interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants and caregivers will be compensated for their time and effort. The participant receives $50 for each completed visit and $67.50 for any unscheduled visit. Caregivers will receive $93.75 for each visit their child completes.
