Convalescent Hospital

  • Providing Long-Term Care

Since 1833, the Convalescent Hospital for Children has served children with chronic conditions requiring long-term hospital care. The Convalescent Hospital joined Cincinnati Children’s in 1973, and today provides financial support for several specialized, long-term care mental health programs and other services housed at Cincinnati Children's, including:

    • The pediatric rehabilitation program, which offers comprehensive rehabilitation services for children suffering from injury or illness that leaves them with physical and / or cognitive disabilities.
    • The transitional care center, which helps children with complex chronic medical conditions make the transition from hospital to home and specializes in tracheotomy / vent management.
    • The Children’s Psychiatric Unit, which provides inpatient and partial hospitalization psychiatric services for children from birth to 12 years of age.
    • Adolescent and medical psychiatric services for inpatient and partial psychiatric and psychiatric / medical services, which are offered for teens 12 through 18 years of age.

Under the guidance of its founding leaders – Erin Riehle, MSN, RN, and Susie Rutkowski, MEd, Project Search has been replicated in more than 150 hospitals, businesses and government agencies in the United States and abroad.
    • The Perlman Center, a specialty center that provides one-of-a-kind integrated therapy programs and care coordination that focus on improving outcomes for children with cerebral palsy and other physical conditions across the age continuum.  It is a leading regional resource for assistive technology.
