  • Comprehensive Care for Fetal Heart Defects

The fetal heart team at the Heart Institute performs more than 1,800 fetal cardiac evaluations annually and about 9,000 cardiac laboratory exams. We can provide comprehensive evaluation of your baby’s condition before birth, giving your child the best chance for long-term success.

Under the direction of Erik Michelfelder, MD, we are dedicated to providing exemplary care to fetuses diagnosed with structural or functional heart disease and to supporting the expectant family in a compassionate, comprehensive manner. We treat conditions such as structural heart disease, fetal arrhythmias and fetal cardiac dysfunction.

We manage these fetal heart problems through an interdisciplinary approach. Parents and referring physicians consult with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, neonatologists, genetic counselors and maternal-fetal medicine specialists to formalize a care plan, which may include education and social services to ensure we cover every aspect of your child’s care.

We partner with the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati to provide the only comprehensive center in the Midwest for fetal evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. The Fetal Care Center is a collaboration between Cincinnati Children’s, University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital, and is one of a very few centers in the world affiliated with a top children’s hospital, two Level III maternity hospitals and three Level III newborn intensive care units.
