Highlights of the Heart Institute
- Our hybrid cardiac catheterization lab is one of only a few highly specialized pediatric catheterization labs in the nation allowing combined catheter-based interventions and surgical procedures to be carried out in a single suite. Our interventional cardiologists have pioneered many catheter-based therapies to improve the outcomes of children with cardiac disease.
- Our heart transplant surgeons have experience performing transplants across a broad age-spectrum from newborns to young adults with complex heart defects.
- Our multidisciplinary diagnostic - Cardiomyopathy Clinic includes a cardiovascular geneticist to evaluate the etiology of cardiomyopathies associated with heart failure.
- Our Clinical Echocardiography Program features the Midwest's largest pediatric echocardiography staff and is a national leader in supplying echocardiography physicians for academic positions across the country. More than 10,000 studies are performed each year at Cincinnati Children's Echocardiography Lab, which is staffed by nine attending cardiologists and 10 sonographers specializing in the field.
- The Heart Institute has a dedicated group of basic scientists with national and international reputations who are solely devoted to understanding the causes of pediatric heart disease and finding novel cures.
- We have the first dedicated Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in the region with a high volume of specialized and complex cases treated by a faculty double-boarded in pediatric cardiology and pediatric intensive care.
