  • Transplant Expertise Focuses on Long-Term Success

The Heart Transplant Program, part of the interdisciplinary Heart Institute, is the oldest pediatric heart transplant program in Ohio. We are part of the Heart Institute’s comprehensive heart failure and cardiomyopathy service.

Our team of cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists are experts in the treatment of complex heart disease and heart transplantation. We are able to care for children and adolescents with uncorrectable congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy, making them potential candidates for transplantation.

    UNOS Approved

Our heart transplant program is approved by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and a member of the Ohio Solid Organ Transplantation Consortium. In addition, our transplant team members are participants in the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Cincinnati Children’s ninth in the nation in heart care and heart surgery in the 2010 guide to best hospitals.

Areas of Heart Transplant Program Emphasis

Our goal is to provide children facing untreatable heart disease a chance to be active members of their families and communities, and the chance to grow emotionally and physically with as little limitation as possible. Our areas of emphasis include:

    • Family-centered care provided by a multidisciplinary  team of cardiologists, surgeons and intensivists
    • Outcomes-focused clinical care and research with the goal of an improved quality of life for our patients
    • Quality initiatives, such as prevention and early detection of hyperlipidemia (high fat content in blood), and early detection and prevention of kidney insufficiency due to the effects of immunosuppression medications
    • Evaluation by two cardiovascular geneticists and a genetic counselor of the etiology of cardiomyopathies associated with heart failure

Our clinical team’s extensive experience and our commitment to long-term quality outcomes form the foundation of the Heart Transplant Program.
