What to Expect at Your First Appointment at Interventional Radiology
In interventional radiology, we use imaging equipment such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) to perform procedures to diagnose and treat conditions. Many times, these procedures are a minimally invasive alternative to surgery.
Some procedures are done with general anesthesia and some are done with local anesthetic. Our team will work with you to determine which approach is best based on the age of the patient and type of procedure.
Making an Appointment at Interventional Radiology
We want it to be easy for you to get the care your child needs. You can contact us directly to schedule an appointment. Or, your child's pediatrician or provider can refer your child to our department. We also take referrals from the emergency department and other hospitals.
Before Your Appointment
A nurse will contact you before your child's appointment to prepare for the upcoming visit. During this call, we will:
- Gather information about any symptoms
- Collect past test results and medical records (We'll provide instructions on how to share this information with us.)
- Provide pre-visit instructions
For procedures requiring general anesthesia you will be contacted by Same Day Surgery with arrival time and location as well as pre-procedure eating and drinking instructions.
You're welcome to call any time before or after your child's visit with questions.
On the Day of Your Visit to Interventional Radiology
Arriving At Your Appointment
We offer interventional radiology procedures at the Burnet Campus. The Burnet Campus has dedicated Interventional Rooms and a hybrid operating room that accommodates both traditional surgeries and interventional radiology procedures.
For procedures requiring general anesthesia you will report to Same Day Surgery on B3.
For procedures not requiring general anesthesia you will report to Radiology on B1. Plan to arrive about 30 minutes before your child's appointment. This will allow you 15 minutes to park and and 15 minutes to check in at our registration desk.

At Your Appointment
You and your child will meet with one of our interventional radiologists prior to the procedure, who will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
After Your Visit to Interventional Radiology
You will receive an "After Visit Summary" at the end of your appointment. It will include important details about your child's procedure. It also will include contact information for your child's care team.
