  • Comprehensive Care Through Experienced Specialists

Cincinnati Children’s is an international leader in caring for children with kidney tumors. Our integrated team of physicians and researchers is at the forefront of developing and testing more effective treatments for these tumors. Our work focuses on areas such as targeted radiation therapy and new drug therapies that prevent cancer cells from multiplying and spreading.

Our experienced specialists treat patients with newly diagnosed, advanced, rare and relapsed kidney cancers, including:

    • Wilms’ tumor
    • Renal cell carcinoma
    • Rhabdoid tumors
    • Clear cell sarcoma
    • Renal angiomyolipoma

    Comprehensive Care

Our specialists take a team approach within the Kidney Tumor Program. This benefits patients in many ways by fostering early detection, an accurate diagnosis and appropriate, coordinated treatment.

An oncologist provides leadership for the care team, whose other members include physicians specializing in:

By bringing together experts in different areas, our multidisciplinary team makes clinic visits more efficient for families and ensures coordinated care. Depending on the child’s needs, the team may also include specialists in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation, or any number of other sub specialists available at Cincinnati Children’s.

The Kidney Tumor Program’s medical director, James I. Geller, MD, plays a key role in developing next-generation kidney tumor treatments. His work benefits patients not only at Cincinnati Children’s, but also at other top medical centers around the world.

    Individualized Treatment

Each new patient undergoes an extensive evaluation in which kidney tumor specialists from different areas of expertise come together to review the child’s medical needs. The team establishes an individualized treatment plan based on  clinical experience and perspectives from the most up-to-date research. The team continues to collaborate throughout the child’s course of treatment and provides referring physicians with regular updates to ensure coordinated care.

    Nursing Excellence

Nurses play an integral role on the multidisciplinary team, providing patient care and extensive education. In fact, Cincinnati Children’s is known for nursing excellence. In 2009, the medical center received Magnet status from the Commission on the Magnet Recognition Program. This is the gold standard for recognizing nursing excellence and collaboration among all care providers and patients. Of approximately 5,700 hospitals in the United States, only 6 percent have achieved this status from the Magnet Recognition Program.
