School Resources
The National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, at Cincinnati Children's, has developed materials to help schools plan for and respond to crisis, loss and grief.
- Guidelines for Responding to the Death of a Student or School Staff: This booklet is designed to help school administrators, teachers and crisis team members respond to the needs of students and staff after a loss such as the death of a student or staff member or when deaths occur that affect many people in the community.
- Guidelines for Schools Responding to Death by Suicide: These guidelines are designed to help school administrators, teachers, and crisis team members respond to the needs of students and staff after a suicide has impacted the school environment as well as when an individual student’s life may be impacted by a suicide within the family
These guidelines are not intended to provide guidance on clinical care of bereavement counseling and are not intended to address losses that impact only one or a few members of the school community.
- Tip Sheet for Japan: This tip sheet provides critical guidance for parents/caregivers as they help children process this disaster.
- New Teacher Training Module: The NCSCB has created an educational powerpoint presentation that includes presenter notes. It can be downloaded and used for teacher training on how to support the grieving student. Save the PowerPoint presentation to your computer to use the presentation and presenter notes.
- Helping Grieving Students Webcast: Scholastic, through funding from the New York Life Foundation, hosted a webcast on how schools can support a grieving student.
