  • About Sports Physical Therapy

Our Sports Medicine Center is a specialized practice with the primary focus on meeting the needs of the young athlete. Our Sports physical therapists work hand in hand with physicians and other specialists to take a multidisciplinary approach to successfully returning your athlete to their sport, whether it’s highly competitive, recreational, or backyard. Our therapists are specifically trained in prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of the athlete.  Their focus is to assist the young athlete through a specifically designed rehabilitation regimen following injury or surgery to enable a quick and safe return to their sport.

    What we offer

Evaluation of the athlete:  At Cincinnati Children’s, we believe children and teens are not just little adults.  Our specialists understand the musculoskeletal development that occurs in adolescents.  This knowledge base drives our evaluation and rehabilitation process to successfully manage a wide variety of overuse and traumatic injuries and conditions in children and young adult.  The individualized evaluation of each athlete enables our therapists to develop a customized rehabilitation program.

Treatment / Rehabilitation of the athlete:  Our goal is to return your child to an active lifestyle as soon as possible with a minimal chance for future injury.  In order to achieve this goal our therapists develop a customized treatment program utilizing advanced pediatric rehabilitation techniques. These techniques will focus on developing or regaining range of motion, flexibility, strength, power, agility, endurance, and neuromuscular control.  Ongoing consultations with the young adult, physician, family, and coaches throughout the rehabilitative process will help ensure appropriate interventions and progress towards long term goals.

Injury Prevention:  Not only do our therapists address the musculoskeletal deficits that are determined during the initial evaluation, but they address the biomechanical faults that may contribute to the initial injury. The biomechanical faults are often addressed through education, repetition, and sport specific tasks to minimize the risk for re-injury when returning to sport. Our staff also offers current programs/clinics for injury prevention that utilize 2-D video analysis software, which is described below.

Education: Education is an important portion of the rehabilitation process, which occurs on a visit by visit basis. Our therapists strongly believe in educating our athletes and their families on what their injury is and why we have specifically developed their current rehabilitation process. We feel that through education, we are able to reach our outcomes successfully.

Family-centered care: Our physical therapists believe strongly in the power of family encouragement and involvement. Parents or those close to the child are encouraged to attend therapy session, held every day of the week, by appointment only.
