Pain Management

  • Inpatient Pain Rehabilitation Program

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital offers a comprehensive inpatient program for children whose severe, chronic pain is preventing them from enjoying a good quality of life. The Inpatient Pain Rehabilitation Program, helps patients learn more about their condition, develop coping and pain management skills and minimize the side effects of their medications. Some patients experience significant pain relief as a result of iPREP, but the ultimate goal is to help them become more independent and resourceful so that they can manage their pain effectively and live a more “normal” life.

This highly structured, 12-day inpatient pain program includes unique features such as:

    • Individual and group therapy with physicians, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, child life specialists, and integrative medicine therapists.
    • Education and support for patients and family members.
    • We emphasize independence. Patients focus on getting better, so they have limited visiting hours and limited access to electronics.

iPREP offers lectures for parents during the program that help them better understand what their children are learning and how to apply those lessons in the “real world.” After the first five days of the program, patients and their families are encouraged to leave the hospital for a half day to enjoy fun activities that will allow them to use some of the pain management skills they’ve been learning in iPREP.

During the second week of the program, patients work with the iPREP team to develop a plan for participating in school, community and home activities as fully as possible after they complete the inpatient pain management program.
