Specialized Services for Children with Communication or Feeding / Swallowing Disorders

Speech-language pathology services at Cincinnati Children’s include comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, consultations, parent counseling, and treatment for children with communication or feeding / swallowing disorders.

Because each child’s needs are unique, our staff consists of specialists in all areas of the field. Therefore, each child is evaluated and treated by a specialist in his or her specific disorder.

Specialty Clinics

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) Clinic

Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a procedure that allows physicians and speech-language pathologists to assess areas surrounding the voice box and opening of the esophagus, through the use of a small flexible telescope.

Velopharyngeal Insufficiency / Incompetence (VPI) Clinic

The team members of the VPI Clinic work together to assess the patient's speech, resonance, velopharyngeal function and genetic background to determine the cause of the speech problem and the contributing factors.

Because children with chronic or complex conditions have multiple medical needs, we take an interdisciplinary approach to care. Our speech-language pathologists work closely with the child’s physicians and other healthcare providers. We often provide co-treatment sessions for the child with other disciplines.
