Surgery is an effective weight loss tool but additional support is needed to facilitate a sustained healthy lifestyle. There is growing evidence that participation in a bariatric support group improves postoperative outcomes. We offer bimonthly support groups for patients and their families before and after surgery. The meetings provide encouragement and support from others who really know what you are experiencing.
The SWLPT Support Groups follow an open format to allow patients to attend a meeting whenever they are able. The meetings are planned by a staff member and the Patient Committee. The format is relaxed with a brief educational presentation and then time for participants to meet other members, tell the story of their own surgical journey and share tips and struggles.
The Patient Committee members provide true expert perspective to help keep the meetings relevant. They assist with social connectedness and provide support for participants between meetings through a private Facebook page and phone contact.
