Initial Evaluation
Upon acceptance into the Center, physicians from all appropriate subspecialties evaluate the child in the clinic. If needed, all subspecialists gather in an operating room to evaluate the child at one time. This examination allows them to consult with one another while they evaluate the child’s condition.
After the evaluation, all involved physicians meet with the family to discuss the initial assessment findings. The findings are discussed during a weekly team meeting. All subspecialty teams collaborate in the development of the treatment plan. A nurse practitioner contacts the family to discuss the recommended next steps.
This coordination of care is essential to the child’s well-being since children who come to the Center often have from more than one disorder. It’s critical that all specialists assess the child to develop a clear picture of the child’s overall health and appropriateness for the airway reconstruction procedure or other intervention.
Pediatric nurse practitioners work closely with physicians and families to ensure coordinated care. They also serve as valuable resources, being readily available to answer questions and address concerns.
Family-Centered Care
In addition, the family is considered to be an integral part of the team. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center incorporates the family-centered care philosophy into every aspect of its clinical and research practice.
At the heart of family-centered care is the belief that health care providers and the family are partners, working together to best meet the needs of the child.
Parents and family members provide the child's primary strength and support. Their insights can give the staff a better understanding of how to improve programs and create friendlier systems.
Clinical Research Program
An active clinical research program that focuses on improving clinical care is also an important component of the center.
Our research in the Aerodigestive and Sleep Center focuses on:
- Quality of life measures
- Treatment efficiency
- Patient outcomes
