The faculty at Cincinnati Children's holds professorships at the University of Cincinnati Anesthesia Department. We are dedicated to educating resident physicians and medical and nursing students in pediatric anesthesia. Cincinnati Children's anesthesia faculty is internationally recognized in anesthesia for premature infants, pediatric cardiac surgery, difficult airway problems, and chronic pain conditions.
The Pediatric Anesthesia Department at Cincinnati Children's performs over 25,000 anesthetics and 5,000 pain consults each year. Anesthesia is administered for all types of surgeries, including cardiac, neurological, craniofacial, transplantation, spine operations, and certain radiological, medical, and dental procedures. The anesthesia may be general, regional (epidural), local (nerve block), or a combination.
The anesthesia faculty leads medical missions to help children needing surgery in developing countries. We also enjoy helping our community through our participation in volunteer programs to mentor children and adolescents.
Outstanding programs in pre-operative evaluation, acute and chronic pain management, hospice care, cardiac surgical anesthesia, and outpatient anesthesia are offered at Cincinnati Children's. The Pediatric Anesthesia Department offers an acclaimed Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship program to educate anesthesiologists seeking specialty in pediatric anesthesia. The program includes a core curriculum, with electives in cardiac and burn anesthesia, pain management, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and research.
The Pediatric Anesthesia Department's research engine, The Institute of Pediatric Anesthesia (IPA), is the only institute in the world dedicated to advancing our specialty. The IPA studies developmental neurobiology, performs clinical trials, and conducts health services analyses to improve the quality and effectiveness of our care.
