Thrombophilia
The Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides state-of-the-art clinical care, education and training in the treatment of children and young adults with thrombotic problems.
The Hematology / Oncology Division's comprehensive clinical care provides a thorough evaluation for genetic and acquired risk factors for thrombosis, diagnosis and treatment of thromboembolic disorders and management of anticoagulation therapy.
About Thrombophilia
Thrombophilia, or the tendency to form blood clots, can manifest itself in many ways. The common presentations include deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, catheter-related thrombosis, heart attack, stroke and other thromboembolic disorders.
While thrombotic disorders occur less frequently in children than in adults, they can still have devastating results. Early identification can provide useful information for the family and the patient, allowing for lifestyle behavior modification and the reduction of the risk for future thrombotic events.
Experienced Laboratory Team
Our experienced staff provides a comprehensive evaluation of thrombotic risk factors.
Utilizing our on-site state-of-the-art laboratory and genetic testing, the program is able to enhance the delivery and quality of care children with thrombophilia receive, while decreasing long-term complications.
Seeking New Treatment
Cincinnati Children's is at the forefront of innovative research and evaluation of new ways to treat thrombophilia as it pertains to sickle cell disease and stroke.
Future research will include the outcomes of deep venous thrombosis in children, childhood and infant stroke and the association of platelet activation in various thrombotic disorders. Patients are invited to participate in the clinical trials conducted by the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center.
Offering Patients Optimal Care
The likelihood of having one or more forms of thrombophilia varies. A complete evaluation by a physician specializing in thrombotic problems offers a reasonable assessment of the risk of thrombosis.
The program incorporates an anti-coagulation management service providing assistance in the initiation and management of anticoagulation in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Necessary teaching and educational materials are provided to patients and caregivers to aid in the proper administration of either oral or parenteral anticoagulant therapy.
Multidisciplinary Approach
The Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Cincinnati Children's, led by Vinod Balasa, MD, is one of the few programs in the nation geared specifically towards providing comprehensive care for children with thrombophilia. Collectively, experts from multiple specialty areas throughout Cincinnati Children's offer children and families optimal care in one location.
