Our researchers focus on finding ways to improve the treatment for sickle cell disease. Some of our current projects include:
- Developing new drugs to reduce the severity of sickle cell disease by improving red blood cell hydration and enhancing blood flow
- Improving transfusion practices and developing oral iron chelators to treat transfusion-related iron overload
- Understanding the ways sickle cells malfunction in the body in order to develop additional new therapies
- Enhancing the efficiency and benefits of newborn screening
- Improving methods for testing hemoglobin
- Making bone marrow transplantation, as a cure for sickle cell disease, safer and available to more patients
- Developing ways to enhance the quality of life for children with sickle cell disease and their families
- Participating fully in the NIH-sponsored Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers Clinical Trials Consortium to offer the newest, most innovative treatment to our patients
