Charles T. Mehlman, DO, MPH, Receives Honors
Recently, Charles T. Mehlman, DO, MPH, Department of Orthopaedics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, was honored on two occasions by his alma mater, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. On October 28, 2006, Mehlman was the recipient of the Medal of Merit, one of the college's most prestigious awards, for his commitment to excellence and to the advancement of osteopathic medicine at the 2006 All Class Reunion Dinner and Award Ceremony in Columbus, Ohio. The following week, Mehlman accepted a position on the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Board.
Mehlman is the Director of Musculoskeletal Outcomes Research, Director of Pediatric Orthopaedics Resident Education, and Co-Director of the Brachial Plexus Center. At the awards ceremony, Mehlman was recognized for his willingness "to take the initiative, as an educator, osteopathic champion, and a researcher with an eye toward providing the best patient care possible."
Mehlman received his DO degree in 1989 from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received a MPH from Harvard University in 1998. A pioneer for osteopathic medicine, Mehlman was the first DO to have staff privileges and to serve on the executive committee at Cincinnati Children's.
With a strong interest in research, Mehlman serves as associate editor for The Journal of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics (The Orthopod) and is consulting editor for several other publications, including the Physician and Sportsmedicine. His research has led to contributions in the areas of orthopaedic diseases, deformity, trauma, tumors and orthopaedic history.
Mehlman holds faculty appointments in pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati, the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Pikeville College of Osteopathic Medicine. An avid historian, Mehlman is known for going beyond teaching the current medical procedures. Richard L. Drake, DO, resident at Cincinnati Children's, says, "Dr. Mehlman is a consummate educator with a special interest in evidence-based care and the historical elements of orthopaedics." Steven P. Brantley MD, resident, agrees. "Dr. Mehlman is well-versed in the history of orthopaedics, allowing him to give students a deeper appreciation of each aspect of care we give today," said Dr. Brantley.
As a patient advocate, Mehlman practices evidence-based, family-centered care and is known for the special attention he gives to each family he sees. Jessica Coleman, the mother of one of Dr. Mehlman's patients says, "Dr. Mehlman takes his time with each family and explains everything. You know when you walk away, you'll have the answers to your questions. He always has time to talk with us and never makes us feel rushed."
