Carrie Emhoolah, administrative assistant, is often the first person parents talk to when they call Cincinnati Children’s Brachial Plexus Center. Her primary role is to gather and provide information, schedule appointments and ensure that families’ needs are met in a timely manner.

“I like to see the transformation our families go through. Often when parents first call, I can sense their despair. When they learn that there are treatment options, I can sense that their fear is replaced by a new optimism.”

“My goal is to make things as easy as possible so parents can focus on the big decisions they need to make for their child,” says Carrie. “I don’t want them to have to worry about the small stuff.”

Carrie empathizes with parents when they have concerns and celebrates in each family’s successes. “I love when they call back after a surgery to schedule a follow-up and tell me how much their child’s arm and hand movement has improved,” she says.

Carrie admires how children with brachial plexus injuries handle challenges. She has noticed that it is because children have no preconceived notions about how to do things. “Children are so resilient and find their own way to succeed, whether it’s using the other hand to assist them or crawling a different way. Adults could learn a lot from the attitude our youngest patients have. They don’t let anything stop them.”

Carrie enjoys working with the families that visit the Brachial Plexus Center from all over the United States and abroad. “I have learned that the one need in everybody’s life is quality health care,” she says. “This is what makes us all the same.”

Carrie strives to make a positive impact on each family she meets. “I like being part of this process by making sure they are scheduled quickly and giving them information that empowers them to make decisions for their child.”

Carrie assists the other members of the Brachial Plexus Team to make sure each child receives the care she would hope to have for her own child. “I love working at a place designed for families to get answers for all their children’s needs. Our interdisciplinary method is not short term care,” says Carrie. “We are all invested in the child’s future.”
