Making a positive difference in people’s lives
Myra Overton realized that pursuing a career in social work was the perfect way to make a positive difference in people’s lives and has been practicing clinical social work in the health care field for over 30 years.
“I enjoy empowering families to help and support them in finding their own voice so that they can become their child’s number one advocate”. Myra and the Brachial Plexus team encourage parents to play an active role in their child’s medical care and treatment process.
As the social worker for the Brachial Plexus team, Myra’s role is to help patients and their families adjust to the medical diagnosis and treatment plan, offer information and referrals for hospital and community-based resources, address financial concerns and provide counseling for many issues that impact patients and their families.
Myra is inspired by parents of children diagnosed with brachial plexus injuries. “I am truly touched by the amazing support provided by two mothers currently involved in the Brachial Plexus Center’s Parent to Parent Program. The mothers decided that they wanted to do something special for other brachial plexus patients undergoing surgery. So, they decided to make beautiful handmade quilts accompanied by a note of encouragement which I present to patients following surgery. This kind gesture is certainly heartwarming and greatly appreciated by the patient’s parents who feel that they are receiving support and encouragement from parents who have faced similar challenges”.
