Supporting Families

The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center offers several educational programs throughout the year for families.

These include:

  • The Annual Sickle Cell Research and Education Day, which provides information about current research studies.
  • Zoo Day, held at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens. There, parents can learn about important medical issues while their children (ages newborn through six) are cared for and enjoy fun activities. This event is co-sponsored by a local organization called Sickle Cell Affected Families of Greater Cincinnati.
  • Other educational programs, special events and support for families, in partnership with Sickle Cell Affected Families of Greater Cincinnati.

Outreach and Education

We also reach out to the broader community to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, through:

  • Participation in local health fairs, including Closing the Health Gap and the Midwest Black Family Reunion
  • Sickle Cell Sabbath encourages local faith-based organizations to raise awareness about sickle cell trait, sickle cell disease and the importance of minority blood donation. We organize this event as part of a state-wide initiative of the Ohio Department of Health.
  • Monthly, free sickle cell trait counseling sessions at Winton Hills Health Center and West End Health Center. These sessions are designed to help families better understand their risk factors.
