At the Bone Marrow Transplantation Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, we take a team approach. A multidisciplinary team ensures that patients receive the most effective treatment and follow-up care possible.
Before the transplant takes place, each patient receives a comprehensive evaluation by physicians, nurses and other health professionals on the blood and marrow transplantation team. At this time, families also may meet with our child life specialists, social workers, home health specialists and other members of the team. We want to ensure that we meet all of the child’s and family’s needs.
Because of the complex nature of a blood and marrow transplant, our team often asks other experts from different areas of the medical center to participate in the child’s care. These experts can include physicians specializing in:
Nursing Excellence
Nurses play an integral role on the blood and marrow transplant team, providing patient care and extensive education. In fact, Cincinnati Children’s is known as a place of nursing excellence. In 2009, the medical center received Magnet status from the Commission on the Magnet Recognition Program. This is the gold standard for recognizing nursing excellence and collaboration among all care providers and patients. Of approximately 5,700 hospitals in the United States, only 6 percent have achieved status from the Magnet Recognition Program.
