Innovative Therapies

In the Leukemia and Lymphoma Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, our team of physicians uses a broad array of leading-edge therapies, such as:

  • The most advanced chemotherapy regimens available
  • Sophisticated radiation therapy that targets cancer cells and spares healthy tissue
  • Molecularly targeted drugs that inhibit cancer cell growth
  • Innovative techniques for blood and marrow transplantation

Our researchers are hard at work on the next generation of cancer therapies, too, including gene and viral therapies.

International Referral Center for Blood and Marrow Transplantation

The Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a leading international referral center for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and myelodysplasia. We have performed more than 1,300 blood and marrow transplants, making us one of the most experienced pediatric transplant programs in the world.

Our blood and marrow transplant team specializes in innovative new approaches to transplant therapy. For example, the team has extensive experience in performing complex stem cell transplants from unrelated donors. The team also utilizes reduced intensity preparative regimens, which offer lower doses of chemotherapy with the potential of fewer side effects. In addition, they have pioneered new applications for blood and marrow transplant, such as transplant for autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome.

Precise Radiation Therapy

Other examples of our innovative therapies can be found within the Cincinnati Children’s Pediatric Radiotherapy Program, co-sponsored by the University of Cincinnati Barrett Cancer Center’s Department of Radiation Therapy. In addition to providing traditional radiation therapy, the program offers leading-edge treatments that deliver high doses of radiation therapy while sparing healthy tissue. As a result, Cincinnati Children's has become a national referral center for patients and families seeking precision radiation therapy.

The program’s leading-edge therapies include:

  • Shaped-beam stereotactic radiation therapy, delivers high doses of radiation using custom-shaped beams
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), allows physicians to modulate the intensity of radiation beams and deliver radiation that conforms to the tumor’s shape
  • Helical image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), also called TomoTherapy, combines advanced image guidance and precise radiation therapy technology to target the tumor from many directions
