Thorough Evaluation, Detailed Treatment Plan
The Immune Deficiency and Histiocytosis Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center provides initial diagnoses, second opinions, immunologic testing and genetic profiles, as well as expert medical care.
We offer a comprehensive, initial evaluation that can last from one to four days. Prior to evaluation, the team reviews test results and any other materials provided by the referring physician.
The initial evaluation includes:
- A thorough history and physical examination
- Blood tests
- Additional tests to assess how the disease is affecting the child's body
- An appointment with a social worker, who helps families connect with helpful resources
Depending on the child’s needs, the care team may ask other specialists at Cincinnati Children’s
to provide an evaluation.
Immune deficiencies affect every patient differently, and may involve many parts of the body.
For instance, some children may have gastrointestinal problems, and others may have issues
with their lungs or liver.
One strength of our center is that we can schedule all of these evaluations during the initial visit.
After reviewing the test results, members of the care team talk at length with the family about the child's health and treatment options. They also provide a written summary and treatment recommendations to the patient's family and referring physician.
