Liver and Kidney Tumor Center

The Liver and Kidney Tumor Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is one of the nation's leading centers for sophisticated multidisciplinary care of children with newly diagnosed and relapsed liver and kidney tumors. The Liver and Kidney Tumor Center at Cincinnati Children's offers a full spectrum of technologically advanced medical, surgical and diagnostic services for children and young adults. The center is a joint effort with the Division of Pediatric Surgery.

Cincinnati Children's is at the forefront of innovative surgical and oncologic therapies for newly diagnosed and relapsed liver and kidney tumors. Cincinnati Children’s is also a referral center for particularly complex liver tumors requiring transplantation, and nearly two dozen cancer-specific liver transplants have been conducted at Cincinnati Children's since 1996. The Cincinnati Children's Liver and Kidney Tumor Center continues research efforts to develop and implement innovative treatments for children with high risk disease.

The Liver and Kidney Tumor Center builds upon national leading programs at Cincinnati Children's in pediatric anti-cancer drug development, advanced surgery and radiology capabilities. The Liver and Kidney Tumor Center is a major primary oncology care and referral center of the national Children's Oncology Group.

In addition, the Cincinnati Children's Liver and Kidney Tumor Center is a major institution of the National Cancer Institute's new pediatric anti-cancer drug research and development initiatives for children - the Pediatric Phase I Consortium.

Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Team Approach

At Cincinnati Children's, children with liver and kidney tumors are cared for by a multidisciplinary team led by oncologists and cancer surgery and transplant specialists. Whether newly diagnosed, relapsed, or in the midst of treatment, all patients and their families referred to Cincinnati Children's Liver and Kidney Tumor Center receive a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment culminating in individualized treatment recommendations. Our multidisciplinary team focuses clinical expertise and laboratory research perspective in comprehensive leading-edge cancer care and new anti-cancer therapies. Collectively, experts from numerous areas of specialty offer children and their families optimal care.

Liver and Kidney Tumor Research

The Liver and Kidney Tumor Advanced Therapies Center offers state-of-the art care for children with newly diagnosed Hepatoblastoma, Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Wilms' Tumor, Angiomyolipoma, Renal Cell Carcinoma and other liver and kidney tumors, and is a major referral center for clinical research of the national Children's Oncology Group.

The Liver and Kidney Tumor Advanced Therapies Center also is a select referral center for the National Cancer Institute's pediatric anti-cancer drug development research initiative for children with high-risk liver and kidney tumors: the Pediatric Phase I Consortium.

Members of Cincinnati Children's Liver and Kidney Tumor Center are intricately involved in the design and implementation of national clinical reseach for children with high-risk or relapsed liver and kidney tumors via representation on the Children's Oncology Group liver, kidney and developmental therapeutics committees and treatment protocols. Dr. James Geller currently is Chair of the Children's Oncology Group Kidney Tumor Developmental Therapeutics Subcommittee for novel anti-cancer drug development for children with relapsed or high risk kidney tumors.

In addition, active research is being conducted locally at Cincinnati Children's to develop new therapies for liver and kidney tumors, including targeted anti-cancer therapy approaches.
