Accredited CF Center

The Cystic Fibrosis Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is one of more than 110 accredited CF centers throughout the nation. These centers are accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1955 dedicated to funding research to find a cure for CF and improving the quality of life for people with the disease.

Attending a CF Foundation accredited care center guarantees quality of care. The CF Foundation has established care guidelines created by teams of health care providers who specialize in CF care. The guidelines include preventive / maintenance care, treatment of lung infections, and recommendations regarding special circumstances such as infection control, enzymes and nutritional assessment.

Multidisciplinary Care Team

Doctors and other CF specialists at accredited centers are dedicated to providing the best care and treatment for those with CF. Care is complex and requires a comprehensive team approach for each individual.

The Cystic Fibrosis Center's care team at Cincinnati Children's includes specialists from other divisions, including Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Pediatric Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery (ENT), Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy and Human Genetics. Specialists in treating adults with CF will join the team as your child becomes an adolescent.

At Cincinnati Children's, the cystic fibrosis doctor heads the care team, which includes:

  • Nurses to coordinate routine care and sick visits
  • Respiratory therapists to measure pulmonary function and teach airway clearance
  • Nutritionists to monitor nutritional status
  • Social worker to assure the emotional health and well-being of your child and your family.
  • The team also helps coordinate outside resources such as home health services and school / educational planning.

You also will meet medical students, residents, fellows and other health care providers who are in training. Education is an essential component of Cincinnati Children's mission, as it is very important that we prepare the next generation of CF caregivers.

Families affected by CF are a crucial part of this educational process. We learn from you and we count on you to be involved. You are the most important members of the team.

Education

Patient care and education are two of the three components of Cincinnati Children's mission. The third is research. Cincinnati Children's is one of only ten specially-designated CF Foundation Research Centers in the United States.

In 1998, Cincinnati Children's was one of the first care centers to join the CF Foundation's Therapeutics Development Network. This is a network of centers that supports the full spectrum of CF drug development – from the discovery of promising drugs to their clinical testing and evaluation.

Research

The goals of our research are to:

  • Gain a better understanding of CF
  • Improve quality of life
  • Discover new therapies
  • Ultimately, to find a cure.

No research will be performed on your child without your permission. We will, however, provide information about opportunities to participate in research activities and answer any questions you may have to help you decide which projects are right for you.
