The Child Abuse Team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides the following table as a guide for health care professionals in interpreting laboratory test results for Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Gardnerella Vaginalis, and other bacteria.

Incubation Period and Symptoms | May cause vaginal discharge. Some infections are asymptomatic. |
| Transmission | This organism is most often seen in sexually active women but has been found in girls and women who have had no sexual contact and have not been sexually abused. |
| Diagnostic Tests | Identification is made by microscopic analysis, bacterial culture and by other methods. |
