Procedure Preparation and Support

In order to increase knowledge and understanding and to reduce stress and fears realted to hospitalization, patients and family members need to be prepared for and supported during procedures.

Each preparation / support should be individualized, meeting the child's developmental and unique family needs. The following are suggested guidelines intended as a resource for the child life specialist to consider and implement tailored to the unique needs of patients and their families.

Infant | Toddler | Preschool l School Age l Adolescent l Adult

Infant: Birth to 1 Year

Preparation Guidelines

  • Prep family using photo book, video, etc.
  • Bring medical example (PICC, electrodes, etc.)
  • Encourage questions
  • Ask for input / discuss support

Support Guidelines

  • Involve family in support
  • Bottle, pacifier, bundle
  • Shade eyes from bright lights
  • Provide calm, quiet sounds / music
  • Gentle stroking
  • Older infant -- bright, simple rattle to focus on, books

Toddler: 1 to 3 Years

Preparation Guidelines

  • Prep family, involve patient using photo book
  • Practice mask play (if applicable)
  • Medical play with doll (not child's)

Support Guidelines

  • Involve family in support
  • Books -- pop-up, flap to open with sound
  • Complex rattles
  • Gentle stroking
  • Reassuring conversation

Preschool: 3 to 5 Years

  • Prep patient and family using photo book, puppet
  • Medical play using real medical equipment with doll
  • Encourage questions
  • Decide coping strategies and practice

Support Guidelines

  • Involve family in support

  • Books -- story, simple, picture search
  • Reassuring conversation
  • Coping strategies
