Forensic Interviewer Training

The Childhood Trust at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers Forensic Interviewer Training for professionals who interview children about suspected child abuse of all types.

Registration

Tuition for the 5-day Forensic Interviewer Training is $900. A late fee of $50 will be added if payment is not received within 30 days after training is completed.

Course / Program Description

The five-day Forensic interviewer training course:

  • Is intended for professionals who interview children about suspected child maltreatment and family violence
  • Includes lectures, practice interviews, and peer review practice
  • Offers full training and peer-reviewed practice in Dr. Thomas Lyon's version of the structured NICHD protocol, the sole fully evidence-based protocol for interviewing children, and one that has been tested on thousands of interviews in four countries
  • Provides additional training and practice in flexible guidelines and interview aids for children who may be inappropriate or unresponsive to the structured protocol
  • Includes training in the developmental screening, the Cognitive Interview, the Touch Survey, Anatomical Drawings, and Anatomical Dolls
  • Offers training in the coding of interviews using three standardized forms that measure interview components, the structure and placement of questions and prompts, and the art of interviewing
  • Uses small group discussion to provide ample opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration and team building
  • Provides every trainee with a CD that contains standardized peer review forms, interview protocol, supplements, and interview aids, and key articles about interviewing, memory and suggestibility, and the impact of trauma on child development
  • Offers special topics by national experts, including:
    1. The Toxic Triad (child abuse, partner battering, and animal cruelty)
    2. The impact of trauma on child development
    3. Child abuse allegations in the context of separated parents
    4. Communicative competence with preschoolers
    5. Interview approaches for children who delay, deny, or recant
  • Offers guidelines for report preparation and court testimony
  • Integrates diversity considerations at every stage of lecture, training, and practice
