Bio

Barbara Walling Boat, PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Cincinnati, and Executive Director of The Childhood Trust of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Boat has conducted research on the use of anatomical dolls in sexual abuse investigations and currently studies relationships among violence to children and animals and domestic violence.

Dr. Boat's special clinical interests are interventions for traumatized children, treatment of dissociative disorders, and working with families where children have witnessed domestic violence.

She trains and supervises community providers in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy / PCIT as part of the Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children project. She also is assisting in developing the Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement / CARE program for non-clinical providers who interact with traumatized children.

Dr. Boat sits on the advisory board of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement.

Research

Dr. Barbara Walling Boat has conducted research on the use of anatomical dolls in sexual abuse investigations and currently studies relationships among violence to children and animals and domestic violence. She also participates in a study on the dissemination of evidence-based treatments for traumatized children and their caregivers.

Special Interests

  • Treatment of dissociative disorders; families in which children have witnessed domestic violence;
  • screening for animal-related experiences to inform relevant therapeutic interventions;
  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy / PCIT and Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement / CARE;
  • presenting training on the links among child abuse, animal cruelty and domestic violence;
  • developing a center for treatment of traumatized children.
