ARMS Outreach Program

Since 1980, Alberto Peña, MD and his team, including Marc Levitt, MD, have operated on more than 2,300 children for anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung's Disease, and other issues related to the bowel, including constipation and fecal incontinence. Being the only comprehensive and multidisciplinary center of its kind, patients come from all over the world to seek treatment from the center. In addition, Drs. Peña and Levitt frequently travel to teach other surgeons about our center's philosophy, treatment techniques, and to assist in surgeries. As a result, Drs. Peña and Levitt have seen a diverse number of patients who reside all over the world.

The ARMS Outreach, a not-for-profit foundation created by Albert Peña, MD, helps fund learning expenses for professionals and colorectal care for families who cannot afford the expense. The “ARMS Outreach” mission is to promote and support advances regarding colorectal problems in children, provide support to economically deprived families and help to educate doctors and nurses from around the world. To that end, a Foundation was created in 1995 for the benefit of children suffering from colorectal problems.

Funds raised by this foundation are used to promote and support advances regarding colorectal problems in children, including but not limited to:

  • Genetics
  • Epidemiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Methods of treatment
  • Analysis of results
  • Treatment of sequela
  • Long Term Care

This is achieved by supporting research projects (clinical and laboratory) and promoting courses or publications designed for health related professionals (physicians, nurses, technicians). Additionally, it will provide economic help for health related professionals from underdeveloped countries to attend courses related to the subject.

Funds are also used to help economically deprived families have access to medical or surgical care, including but not limited to costs of diagnostic tests, stoma supplies or dilators, or any other needs which seem appropriate, as well as to defray traveling expenses of these patients to come to Cincinnati for specialized care.
