Bowel Management Program Overview
Bowel management is an important part of the care of many patients with imperforate anus. Seventy-five percent of patients born with anorectal malformations can achieve fecal continence, often with a little help with their constipation.
Approximately 25% of patients with anorectal malformations, as well as a small percentage of patients with Hirschsprung's disease, and some patients with spinal problems are fecally incontinent. For them, the bowel management program is an artificial way of keeping them clean and dry.
