Female Anorectal Defects

Vestibular Fistula in Females

Vestibular fistula is the most frequent defect seen in females.

The rectum opens through an abnormally narrow orifice located in the vestibule of the genitalia, that is, immediately outside the hymen. Meconium does not pass through the genitalia before 20 hours of life.

More than 90 percent of these patients achieve bowel control when adequately managed. Most surgeons believe a colostomy is indicated during the first few days of life.
