ARMS Outreach Program
Since 1980, Alberto Peña, MD and his team have operated on 1800 children posterior sagitally. Most have been operated on in the United States, but Dr. Peña frequently travels around the world to teach other surgeons.
| Continent | Countries | Procedures |
|---|
| Europe | 16 | 270 |
| South and Central America | 10 | 257 |
| Asia | 12 | 60 |
| Africa | 3 | 16 |
| Pacific Ocean and Australia | 2 | 13 |
| North America | 2 | 1084 |
| Total | 45 | 1700 |
The great majority of those children are from deprived families in need of Dr. Peña's special care. They received that care, in part from Dr. Peña's special interest in those situations and in part from the donations provided to Dr. Peña's practice from those who want to see this important program continued.
For that reason, Dr. Peña developed the ARMS Outreach program to ensure these opportunities continue for children who would not otherwise receive this type of care.
Our "ARMS Outreach" mission is to promote and support advances regarding colorectal problems in children as well as to provide support to economically deprived families. To that end, a Foundation was created in 1995 for the benefit of children suffering from colorectal problems.
The funds raised by this foundation will be used to promote and support advances regarding colorectal problems in children, including but not limited to:
- Genetics
- Epidemiology
- Pathophysiology
- Methods of treatment
- Analysis of results
- Treatment of sequela
- Rehabilitation
This will be achieved by supporting research projects (clinical and laboratory) promoting courses or publications designed for health-related professionals (physicians, nurses, technicians).
Additionally, it will provide economic help for health-related professionals from underdeveloped countries to attend courses related to the subject.
Funds could also be used to help economically deprived families have access to medical or surgical care, including but not limited to costs of diagnostic tests, stoma supplies or dilators, or any other needs which seem appropriate.
