Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Services

The Critical Care Medicine Division at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is composed of 25 multidisciplinary critical care beds located in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Around-the-clock physician and nursing coverage is provided for all children beyond the newborn age. All pediatric subspecialties are available for consultation.

All forms of mechanical ventilatory support, including liquid ventilation and high frequency ventilation, are available. Renal dialysis, continuous veno-venous / veno-arterial ultrafiltration, and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) are also employed as support modalities in the PICU.

Care of postoperative "open" and "closed" heart surgical patients is routinely provided.

All of the clinical Pediatric Intesive Care Unit (PICU) staff at Cincinnati Children's are sub-board-certified or eligible in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. The PICU physician staff consists of five pediatric intensivists.
