Announcing Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Screening
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center now offers gene carrier screening for cystic fibrosis (CF). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends CF carrier screening for all couples seeking preconception or prenatal care -- not just those with a personal or family history of carrying the CF gene. Eighty percent of children with CF are born to parents with no prior history of the disease.
Cystic fibrosis -- one of the most common inherited diseases -- affects approximately 1 in 3,300 people in the United States. It is most common in Caucasians, but it can occur in people of other ethnic backgrounds.
Our nationally recognized genetic diagnostics experts use state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to provide reliable and timely results. If test results show that one or both parents are gene carriers, our genetic counselors will help them explore all their options, thereby allowing them to make an informed decision about planning their family.
