Dental Care
Children with special health care needs often have more severe dental problems and are more difficult to treat. Their disability, as well as the increased incidence of anxiety that may accompany their physical and / or developmental disabilities, present additional challenges for care. This can result in the need for sedation or general anesthesia. Unfortunately, insurers and state programs may not cover sedation or general anesthesia for dental work. We therefore often recommend bundling dental work with other procedures that may need sedation, such as minor surgeries or endoscopies. Sedation for MRI's or audiology can also benefit by bundling. In addition to the cost savings, combining procedures reduces the patient's exposure to additional anesthesia.
The Center for Infants and Children with Special Needs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has compiled a list of Southern Ohio dental care resources for children with specialized health care needs. If you have a dental emergency, cannot afford a dentist or lack dental insurance, there are places that can help.
