Dialysis Unit Overview

The Dialysis Unit at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, operated through the Division of Nephrology / Hypertension, provides comprehensive renal care for patients with end stage renal disease and acute renal failure, from birth through 20 years of age.

Our experienced staff works closely with the child and parents to develop and implement a comprehensive care plan. Our team includes:

  • Pediatric Nephrologists
  • Registered nurses with pediatric dialysis training
  • A social worker
  • A renal dietitian
  • A child life specialist
  • A massage therapist

A primary physician and nurse will follow the care of each patient and provide education and support for you and your child.

Chronic care services for dialysis patients are routinely provided six days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday hours are 6 am to 4:30 pm. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday hours are 6 am to 12 pm. Acute care services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Acute renal services are also provided to the Shriners Burns Institute in Cincinnati.

  • Outpatient hemodialysis
  • Outpatient peritoneal dialysis (PD)
  • Training and support services for home PD
    • Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD)
    • Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
  • Dietary and social services
  • Pre-kidney transplant evaluation
  • Massage therapy
  • Access to Interpreter Services

Faculty and Staff

The Dialysis Unit Faculty and Staff includes registered nurses experienced in the dialysis of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. Each patient is assigned a primary nurse who oversees the patient's dialysis management. These nurses are responsible for the actual dialysis procedure, and for planning future management with the patient and family.
