Treatment Options for Kidney Failure
Healthy kidneys cleanse the blood by removing excess fluid, minerals and wastes. They also make hormones that keep the bones strong and the blood healthy. When the kidneys lose their ability to function properly, harmful wastes build up in the body, blood pressure may rise, and the body may retain excess fluid and not make enough red blood cells. When this happens, treatment is required to replace the work of the failed kidneys.
The two types of available treatment are dialysis and transplantation.
