Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome Services

The Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome in the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers a new and innovative approach to the care of individuals with Down syndrome.

Full Continuum of Care for Down Syndrome Patients

The Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome conducts research and offers interdisciplinary evaluations and intervention for infants, children, adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome. By providing a range of comprehensive services within one center, families can now spend less time pursuing services through multiple agencies and professionals.

The service model and manner in which care is provided continually evolve in response to the changing needs of the community. To provide the full continuum of care the Center is comprised of three essential components:

  • Evaluation
The Down Syndrome Clinic, established in 1985, offers complete assessments by experts in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, speech / language pathology, social work, feeding, occupational and physical therapy, psychology and special education.

The evaluations provide information on current levels of functioning and recommendations for new or continued intervention. Referrals can be made to other medical specialists (which may include ENT, ophthalmology, cardiology and neurology) within Cincinnati Children's and laboratory studies can be ordered as needed.
  • Treatment
The Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome provides consultation and direct intervention in the areas of speech / language development, behavior management, education, occupational therapy, physical therapy and feeding.

The staff is available to work with children and their families, as well as professionals and agencies in the community, to maximize the potential for all individuals with Down syndrome. Individual needs are met by creating and integrating a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.
  • Research (funded by the Emily Ann Hayes Research Fund)
The goals of the Emily Ann Hayes Down Syndrome Research Fund, established in 1996, are to stimulate and support clinically relevant research that relates to children with Down syndrome. This research is conducted by professionals throughout Cincinnati Children's including the disciplines of pediatrics, speech / language pathology, psychology, otolaryngology, audiology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonary medicine and radiology.
